American Foreign Policy free essay sample

This paper analyzes the requirement for change in American Foreign Policy through the assessments of three articles. An assessment of American Foreign Policy from three articles from Annual Editions American Foreign Policy: Article 33, Musclebound: The Limits of U.S. Force by Stephen M. Walt; Article 12, A Small Peace for the Middle East by Arthur Hertzberg; and Article 11, To Be An Enlightened Power by Wu Xinbo. It talks about the general international strategy subject that interfaces the articles together, the focal contentions of each article, the article the writer will in general help, and what ought to be the last international strategy reactions and answers for the issues. Every one of the three creators, Walt, Hertzberg, and Xinbo, obviously accept that the United States should change its way to deal with international strategy. The creators sees are connected by their picture of the United States as the significant super force on the planet and the issues and duties that emerge with this reality. During the mid 1900s, and in any event, looking to the current day, on balance has the ascent of American as a domain or hegemon been working for the worldwide great? Taking a gander at this thought in simply highly contrasting terms, sure. US inclusion during the late 1800s and mid 1900s, including the freedom of Spanish provinces, for example, Cuba and the Philippines, no ifs, ands or buts yielded various universal advantages to the locals of these areas and the United States. Be that as it may, if when looking further and more, to the real inspiration for the fast ascent of the US to the highest point of the worldwide society and what really occurred after the underlying inclusion, it turns out to be progressively clear that perhaps, the US was not really the ideal country that everybody, including US residents thought they were. Because of the round of governmental issues, the craving to extend the economy, and the contemplations about getting land in geostrategic areas, the apparently unadulterated inspirations for moving powers past the outskirt of the nation become damaged. Indeed, even from the beginning of the country, one of the essential focal points of the individuals and the legislature was the extension of the economy to get serious with the more industrialized Europe. At first, through duties, sponsorships from the administration, and remote credits, American organizations gradually turned out to be similarly as competent, if not more than those in Europe. What's more, the tremendous new mainland had the advantage of a plenitude of regular assets. Moving into the late 1800s and mid 1900s, the US economy and organizations were sufficiently able to show up into the worldwide spotlight. While trying to acquire shoppers and discover more assets to make, the US ravenously looked to frame monetary unions with nations everywhere throughout the world as per the thoughts set forth in Washington’s Farewell address. Be that as it may, as wars started to destroy Europe, the United States unavoidably got included. Because of monetary partnerships with nations on the two sides of wars like WWI, the best approach appeared to be essentially to stay impartial as arranged and proceed with exchange. In any case, to these European countries, accommodating the adversary was impossible. While the war introduced a one of a kind and gainful dare to arms fabricates and different businesses in the United States, it turned out to be progressively certain that lack of bias was not a reasonable alternative if the administration needed to secure US residents, especially US trader and exchange paths open. The sinking of the Lusithania, while still a British Ship, was one of the last straws, at last adding the United States to the blend of developing universal forces occupied with a bleeding war. The ceaseless utilization of U-vessels by Germany on any American vendor transports in European waters couldn't go unnoticed. In any case, when Wilson openly tended to the country he declared that the United States was going in to help carry harmony to the country and attempt to move in the direction of a discretionary arrangement. He needed to bring popular government and the goals of opportunities to the area. Nonetheless, in the event that one really sees what was in question for the Americans, one understands that this ideological way of thinking was not the center purpose for the section into the war. So as to save the economy, the exchange courses that were set up, and keep up the success that was seen in the ongoing past, a steady Europe is vital. As a wellspring of shoppers and general exchange accomplices, European countries were basic to American organizations. Notwithstanding, there is no uncertainty that America’s entrance into WWI and the harmony procedure a while later had no advantages. All things being equal, the political association in attempting to make the American Empire ought not be overlooked. Or maybe, it is essential to take note of how Americans political contribution, particularly in procedures after WWI, were advantageous yet at the same time with American advancement on the most fundamental level. Nonetheless, it is significant toâ note that American extension during this timeframe was filled by what are presently called the â€Å"Foreign Policy Elite,† a gathering of government officials, civil servants, and well off Americans who had impressive effect on the political choices made during the timespan. For sure, the longing of these individuals to grow showcases and improve the customer ba se of significant Americans organizations. As a result of the political clout controlled by these people, they had the option to adequately control enactment and affirmations of war, remembering that against Spain for request to free Cuba, the Philippines, and Guam. In any case, more critically is noticing the American effect on the harmony procedures straightforwardly after WWI. Wilson’s fourteen focuses and plans for harmony were instrumental trying to carry harmony to war-torn Europe. The fourteen focuses definite an arrangement to attempt to have a perceived leverage between all the countries in Europe while keeping any one country from assuming the fault for the war or paying reparations. Furthermore, setting up the League of Nations to help go about as a center man was a novel one for the timespan. Unfortunately, the fourteen focuses were never placed into impact as the European countries met up, barring Russia and Germany, so as to make an arrangement that worked for them. Surely, the bargain of Versailles had Germany paying reparations that would obliterate their economy for quite a long time and make land fringes that would just serve to fuel the fire for more clash. Wilson could have minded less, and basically looked as Europe lit the fire that would in the long run start WWI. The main piece of Wilson’s thought that was received was the League of Nations. Be that as it may, unexpectedly, the US never joined because of political strains among Wilson and the republicans in congress who didn't need a global body to administer their decisions. In this by itself, unmistakably the political contention that existed during this timespan served to incredibly impact American nearness on the planet just as their international strategy. While America’s expectations were honorable in attempting to carry harmony to Europe, the inaction to advance US thoughts shows that occasionally, America was not as solid as it should have been in endeavoring to realize majority rule government and world harmony. Notwithstanding the unadulterated governmental issues and economy related with American international strategy, the longing to extend both monetarily and ideologically expected us to have existences in geo vital areas around the world. After the Spanish-American war, the United States got land abroad, including the American Guam and the Philippines. While the US entered the war under the falsification of carrying popular government and opportunity to the locale, it must be seen how and why the US really got associated with this contention. Initially, under the Monroe Doctrine, it was essential to expel outside impact from the western side of the equator. It was not adequate that Spain controlled settlements in the Caribbean, so near the country. Along these lines, while the US interceded for the sake of equity and opportunity for the occupants of those islands, they had different inspirations for doing what we did. Undoubtedly, the individuals of the United States discovered that it is critical to not have European impact in the Western Hemisphere. With the disturbance desolating each and every European nation, saving nobody, the US took in the significance of having a solid worldwide standing, particularly concerning geopolitical significance. Recalling that we were generally centered around the development of exchange courses and trade, having islands in key refueling lines to Asia and Europe and even to South America was critical. Furthermore, so as to smooth out exchange courses between the Pacific and the Atlantic, the United States militarily took over Panama so as to assemble and complete the Panama waterway. While the US had a concurrence with Panama that we would leave them alone self-ruling, so as to propel US geopolitical interests, the legislature â€Å"temporarily† broke the understanding, exhibiting the American’s want to improve just their personal satisfaction. â€Å"We hold these realities to act naturally clear that all men are made equivalent. † These words, composed by the establishing fathers of the country, are a genuine demonstration of what precisely America should represent. America wants to attempt to bring the constitution any place the US banner goes, yet genuinely what happens is the thing that should be analyzed. It must be understood that while Americans attempt to work with attempting to spread goals, for example, vote based system and opportunities, they certainly have their own thought processes in doing what they do. On an essential level, the United States Empire was a power for extending beliefs that were accepted to be acceptable and principal to mankind. Be that as it may, the genuine explanation behind proceeding with the activities is marginally less ideological. Taking a gander at the particular instances of the Spanish American War and US contribution in World War I, it is obvious that the United States on an entire had respectable expectations of spreading the thoughts of general opportunities and vote based system.

For Those Writing Their First Novel

For Those Writing Their First Novel Wow! Is this really the year you’re going to sit down and finally write your first novel? You’re all geared up, ready to rock ‘n roll, fingers poised over the keyboard waiting to channel your creative muse. There’s just one wee problem… how to actually transfer the best-seller in your head into a completed manuscript. If this is your first attempt at novel writing, knowing how to turn your dream into reality can seem a daunting task. Well, fear not intrepid novelist. All you really need are a few fundamental steps to use as guideposts to keep motivation up, and moving in the right direction. And this post is going to give you those steps. They’ll help to break down such an ambitious project so you’ll always know what your next step is going to be. But, be warned… once you’ve read this post, you’ll never be able to procrastinate with quite the same level of comfort. There will be no more excuses, so if you’re not really committed, maybe you should check your email. Or water the plants, or re-organize your desk again… Still here? Wonderful. Let’s begin. Step 1 â€" Own Your Story Sure, you know what your story’s about because it’s been rolling around in your head for years, but now it’s time to commit it to paper. Not the 1,000 page version, not yet. No, to make a strong start you need a condensed version that will encapsulate the core idea of your story in one sentence. That’s right, one sentence. This is the essence of your story, its fundamental matter. And it’s around this central idea that all aspects of your novel will build upon all the plot twists, character quirks, settings and moods will grow from this one sentence. Think of it as the ‘big bang’ of your novel â€" a point of singularity that contains every story element in potential form. Keep it short, and make it as succinct and clear as possible absolutely no frills at this point. If you’re stuck, read the “one-line blurbs on the New York Times bestseller list” for inspiration. Step 2 â€" Own Your Writing Goals This is your novel, so you get to set the rules. But, there’s a few questions you’ll want to ask to establish a clear plan for how and when you’re actually going to write. Once you’ve worked out the answers, put your steps into a calendar and stick to it. Here’s a few sample questions to consider: How long will my novel be? What’s the final word count? How many words can I write in a day? (check out this Lifehack post on calculating a daily word count). Do I need ‘solitude’ to write? If so, when’s the best time to write without distraction? What tools and resource materials will I need? Will I use a software program to organize my notes, and if so, which one? Will I need an accountability buddy to stay on track? Should I join a writers’ support group? And how much time will that take? How am I going to deal with resistance when it comes up? (you know it will, might as well be prepared). The clearer your goals are at the outset, the more likely you’ll be able to deal with obstacles in an efficient manner when they arise. Step 3 â€" Brush Up on Fiction Basics This being your first novel, you’ll want to spend some time in reacquainting yourself with the elements that go into creating compelling fiction: components such as voice, theme, character development, setting and dialogue. Read your favorite authors, or those successful in your genre, and study how they address and employ the basics of sound novel writing. Step 4 â€" Sketch a Plot Outline Now that you have your one sentence summation, it’s time to decide on the structure of your novel. Will your story follow the premises of a three act plot, or will it be more narrative in nature? This may change as you go along, but having a pre-established structure will guide your focus and keep inspiration strong. Begin by jotting down some notes on post-its and arranging them on blank sheets of paper to describe the key events/crisis points for your main characters. Re-arrange as needed as your design takes shape, then move them through the story’s timeline to get an idea of how the plot will develop. This post by Victory Crayne has more details on sketching a plot outline. Step 5 â€" Character Development and Writing Scenes As an aspiring author, it’s helpful to have a good understanding of what motivates your characters before you begin writing scenes. One way to do this is to sit down and interview them. Determine their age, occupation, history etc. Next, determine their “core traits and values”. Create their personality ‘issues’ â€" what are their blind spots, fears, ambitions, strengths and weaknesses? Once you’ve established a persona for your characters, you can begin the process of writing scenes. From your design notes, pick a character and event. Choose their particular attitude for this event and give him or her a problem, then write about how they would handle it. Include the basics of good story telling such as setting, emotional tone, dialogue etc to create well-rounded, enticing scenes. Step 6 â€" Problem Solving You’ll have days when resistance rears its ugly head. When you find that the words have dried up, the infamous ‘writers’ block’, just write anything that comes to mind. Yes, it will be drivel destined only for the garbage can, but at least you’ll be writing â€" which is infinitely better than giving into the inner critic’s formless fears and doubts. And there you have it â€" the basics to successfully write your first novel. Now that you know what to do, there’s not really any excuse for not doing it, is there? So off you go, get to work, stay the course and celebrate when you’re finished.

Introduction to the Structure of U.S. Government

For all that it is and does, the United States federal government is based on a very simple system: Three functional branches with powers separated and limited by constitutionally declared checks and balances. The executive, legislative and judicial branches represent the constitutional framework envisioned by the Founding Fathers for our nations government. Together, they function to provide a system of lawmaking and enforcement based on checks and balances, and separation of powers intended to ensure that no individual or body of government ever becomes too powerful. For example: Congress (legislative branch) can pass laws, but the president (executive branch) can veto them.Congress can override the presidents veto. The Supreme Court (judicial branch) can declare a law approved by Congress and the president unconstitutional. The president can appoint judges to the Supreme Court, but Congress must approve them. Is the system perfect? Are powers ever abused? Of course, but as governments go, ours has been working quite well since Sept. 17, 1787. As Alexander Hamilton and James Madison remind us in Federalist 51, If men were angels, no government would be necessary. Recognizing the inherent moral paradox posed by a society in which mere mortals govern other mere mortals, Hamilton and Madison went on to write, In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place The Executive Branch The executive branch of the federal government ensures that the laws of the United States are obeyed. In carrying out this duty, the President of the United States is assisted by the Vice President, department heads – called Cabinet Secretaries – and the heads of the several independent agencies.   The executive branch consists of the president, the vice president and 15 Cabinet-level executive departments. The President The President of the United States is the elected leader of the country. As the head of state, the president is the leader of the federal government, and Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces. Elected according to the Electoral College process, the president serves a four-year term and is limited to serving no more than two terms. The Vice President The Vice President of the United States supports and advises the president. Under the process of presidential succession, the vice president becomes president if the president becomes unable to serve. The vice president can be elected and serve an unlimited number of four-year terms, even under multiple presidents. The Cabinet The members of the president’s cabinet serve as advisors to the president. The cabinet members include the vice president, heads or â€Å"secretaries† of the executive departments, and other high-ranking government officials. The heads of the executive departments are nominated by the president and must be confirmed by a simple majority vote of the Senate. Legislative Powers of the PresidentRequirements to Serve as PresidentPresidents Pay and Compensation The Legislative Branch The legislative branch, composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate, has the sole constitutional authority to enact laws, declare war and conduct special investigations. In addition, the Senate has the right to confirm or reject many presidential appointments.   The Senate There are a total of 100 elected Senators—two from each of the 50 states. Senators may serve an unlimited number of six-year terms. The House of Representatives ï » ¿There are currently 435 elected Representatives, according to the constitutional process of apportionment, the 435 Representatives are divided among the 50 states in proportion to their total population as reported by the most recent decennial U.S. Census. In addition, there are non-voting delegates who represent the District of Columbia and the territories in the House of Representatives. Representatives may serve an unlimited number of two-year terms. The Powers of CongressRequirements to be a U.S. RepresentativeRequirements to be a U.S. SenatorSalaries and Benefits of U.S. Congress MembersHow Bills Become LawsWhy We Have a House and SenateThe Great Compromise: How Congress was Created The Judicial Branch Composed of federal judges and courts, the judicial branch interprets the laws enacted by Congress and when required, decides actual cases in which someone has been harmed. Federal judges, including Supreme Court justices, are not elected. Instead, they are appointed by the president and must be confirmed by the Senate. Once confirmed, federal judges serve for life unless they resign, die, or are impeached. The U.S. Supreme Court sits atop the judicial branch and federal court hierarchy and has the final say on all cases appealed to it by the lower courts. There are currently nine members of the Supreme Court—a Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices. A quorum of six Justices is required to decide a case. In the event of tie vote by an even number of Justices, the decision of the lower court stands.   The 13 U.S. District Courts of Appeals sit just below the Supreme Court and hear cases appealed to them by the 94 regional U.S. District Courts which handle most federal cases.

Renewable Sources Of Energy Sources - 1213 Words

Energy Sources Introduction Energy sources have been identified as being vital in running virtually all domestic and industrial operations. There are two types of energy sources; renewable energy sources and nonrenewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources refer to the kinds that are naturally replenished. These include sunlight, the wind, ocean tides, waves, geothermal heat and rain (Tiwari et al., 2012). Nonrenewable energy sources, on the other hand, are the kinds that do not renew themselves at a rate sufficient enough to meet human demand. Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas, minerals, metal ores and groundwater all comprise nonrenewable energy sources (Verma et al., 2015). In recommending the category of choice having weighed the benefits and demerits of each, science has played an important role. According to scientific research, nonrenewable sources of energy are not recommended due to the massive demerits that come with their use. The renewable sources of energy listed above have some advantages. They are naturally occurring and thus do not require much effort to harness. Besides, they are natural components of the environment whose use does not contribute to environmental pollution (Tiwari et al., 2012). The fact that they are never depleted also guarantees users who have installed the necessary harnessing machinery, of a continuous supply of energy. In the process of the successful outcomes of the objectives of the company, the manager and the employees contribute generously (hr.toolbox.com, 2017). The company fails to achieve its objectives when the culture of the organisation is not understood by both properly. In this assignment the new management policy of motivating the employees of the Top Trucking Company has been studied. The assignment discusses how the new culture of the company and the initiatives if the manager brought changes in the company. Overview of the company Top Trucking Companys Wollongong has got its reputation as the best yard within the organisation and in the region. The yard was considered as the high performing yard. The performance was duly encouraged by a union delegate, George Psaros. Despite of its strong position in the market, the workplace faced problems for its autocratic manager. The manager was very arrogant and death with the drivers in a different way and that was not appropriate for the manager. The situations became very bad and the owner of the company sold it to the big national transport group. The new company appointed a new manager and changed in the process of Human Resource Management. The new manager changed the work place situation, cleaned the yards, installed computer for monitoring of the yard and motivated the drivers to work well. The role of the Human Resource Management in the change situation in the case study organisation The Human Resource Management plays a pivotal role in utilizing the potential of the employees as per the need of the organisation. In the case study organisation this has been found that after the change of the management and appointment of the manager, the Top Trucking Companys Woollongong saw a change in the culture of it (Glisson Lawrence, 2011). The HRM initiative became successful after the strategies of the company ware changed. The period of change of the ownership of the company from old owner to the new owner becomes very crucial for the HR people. The transition period was very challenging for the HRM policy makers. The truck drivers were annoyed with the old managers and they were required to motivate and it was very important to make them ready for the new culture (Lim, et al., 1996). The new strategy of the company became successful as the strategies focused on the needs of the employees. The HRM strategies focused on health and safety, training, technical and customer s service and wellbeing of the drivers. This was the most important plans that have to be incorporated in the HRM policy in order to satisfy the employees (Chorus.co.nz, 2017). The strikes called against the new system and the management became useless at the need and George realised that the new manager is working for the improvement of the company and the employees. The Guest Model approach of the new management David Guest has developed this model. The Guest model claims that the HR manager formulates unique strategies in order to begin some practices that are not followed earlier. The strategies bring appropriate outcomes when they are executed appropriately (Drucker, 2014). The Guest model advocates that the results of the strategies will make a change in the behaviour and performance of the employees and at the end the financial benefits are also given to the employees (Zhu, 2008). Thus the model focuses on the HR strategy, practice, behavioral outcomes results, changes in the performance and the financial consequences. In the case study organisation this ahs been found that new management becomes successful when the HR manager becomes successful in implementing the strategies Initiative of the new manager The appointment of the new manager in the company became successful for the company to manage the people. The manager wanted to be very motivated person and he did not bother to work to bring the changes in the company. Initially, he faced problems from the drivers those whop went against him. The drivers were also supported by the union delegate, George. Bu all the initiatives taken by the new company brought changes in the employees. They all realised that the new manager is working for their safety, benefits and encouraging developing their skills. The new trucks and new uniforms to the drivers encouraged them to work successfully. Role of changes in the Top Trucking Company The manager wanted to clean the yard and worked for the safety of it. The manager installed new computer for the management of the warehouse. The occupational health became the major concern for the managers. The manager talked top the drivers of the company and also talked to union people. This helped him to communicate with the employees and to learn about the things that the workers want from the management (analytitech.com, 2017). The manager managed the strike of the drivers in the beginning and with appropriate dialogue he managed all the issues in the company. The new manager wanted to develop the skills of the drivers. He offered appropriate training to the employees. The skills development became the core value of the new management. This helped the drivers to feel that the new management is working for the development of the employees. Communication became a successful way for the new manager to motivate the workers and the union people. The new manager wanted to communicate all the information regarding the development of the company and talked to the drivers about their views. This helped the drivers and union people believe that they are also a part of the decision making process of the company (Fred Jonathan, 2009). George also felt happy when he was given due importance by the new manager. The dignity of George remained same in the new management. This encouraged George and he did not want to bring any loss to the company and supported the new mangers to do his job. Importance of George and the new managers in the new initiatives George and the new manager play vital role in the change process. The new manager with open minded approach wanted to bring the change in the company. The new manager worked like a transformational leader (Journalpsyche.org, 2017). He wanted to bring changes in the company through new initiatives. The removal of new manager will create trouble in the growth of the company as he has been accepted by drivers and their union. On the other hand George plays an important role. He is very ideal for the drivers and the union. The union does not want its removal. The combined efforts of George and new managers brought success to the company. Thus the new change requires both to contribute till the strategies become their culture of the organisation (University of Melbourne, 2013). The role of blue collar in the change initiatives The blue collar employees in the organisation refer to the employees those who come under the working group or the non executive group. In this group, this has been observed that the union motivates them more (Earl, 2010). The employees are not so much aware about the policies and laws. They depend upon their leaders of the union and get motivated by them. The change in the organisation depends upon the blue collar workers. They are the real workers. They carry out the policies and the strategies become successful for their contribution. Thus the initiatives of the blue collar workers are very important (simplilearn.com, 2017). In the public and service sector union we find that the employees are skilled and they do not accept the change immediately (Govindarajan, 2007). These categories of the people do not follow the command of their leaders. Thus in comparison to the public and service sector unions, the blue collar union supports the management for good initiatives for a change. Conclusion Change is very important when the company meets some difficulties. The change in the culture of the organisation is a very difficult process. It requires the sincere efforts of the management and the employees to make an agreement for a change. The management and the employees require contributing and working parallel to gain the competitive advantage in the market. In the case study organisation this has been found that the new manager controlled the drivers and the union people with the help of George and new HRM strategies. Bibliography analytitech.com, 2017. Steroids In Sports Essay Example For Students

Steroids In Sports Essay Ever since their introduction into sports in the later 1950s the use of anabolic steroids has been a controversial issue. Much debate has arisen dealing with whether steroids should be allowed for performance enhancement. If youre not familiar with them, The 1994 Merrian-Webster Dictionary defines an anabolic steroid as, any of a group of synthetic hormones sometimes taken by athletes in training to increase temporarily the size of their muscles. However, its not just the athletes preparing for rigorous competition that have been using these drugs. Business Weekly told of a study performed by the University of Illinois School of Public Health in which the results were shocking. According to Paul Goldstein, the chief investigator, individuals from all walks of life have admitted to the use of steroids. He states,Were finding firemen, students, lawyers, teachers- people from all economic classesmost of them taking the drugs for cosmetic reasons 177 All of these individuals had admitted to use because of the positive effects the steroids provide for their appearance. Along with these positive effects also come the negative ones. We will write a custom essay on Steroids In Sports specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Symptoms such as acne, psychotic states, paranoia, headaches, high blood pressure, heart failure, strokes, and liver and kidney damage with quite a lengthy list of other harmful side effects related to extensive use. According to Dr. Robert Vow in his book Drugs, Sports, and Poli! tics, along with trying to keep competitions fair and equal for all who entered, these were the main reason that anabolics have been banned from sports since the 1976 Olympic games. Since these early years, not much has been heard about the use of steroids. True, occasional incidents remind us they are still around . For instance, when Ben Johnson was stripped of his gold medial in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and Lyle Alzados death in 1992. For the most part though things seemed to have quieted down. This is speculated to be from the growing efforts to educate athletes and individuals on the extreme dangers associated with these steroids. Along with this education, one can not escape hearing the horror stories about what these drugs have already done to others and what it will do to them after prolonged use. With such an impressively long list of harmful side effects associated with steroid use, one could be certain that individuals would shy away from them. After all, the original purpose is to enhance their physical stature, not risk damaging it. Wed like to think that due to the strict regulation on todays athletes in competition, it would cause them to think twice before using steroids. Another possible reason for the declining use is that theyre nearly impossible to get since they were barred from non-medical distribution back in 1991. These are definitely good points and one could easily be persuaded that such is the case . However, not everyone shares the same point of view. The other school of thought is that steroid use and abuse is just as wide spread today as ever, if not even more rampant. Athletes feeling are that the gains far outweigh the risks even if they are just temporary enhancements. There are only a dozen or so reported fatalities dealing with steroid use, therefore individuals consider their odds to be pretty good. As far as regulation is concerned, as long as there have been steroids, there have been ways around the detection testing in an athletes system. Another theory plays on the fact that its not only the elite athletes using them. Teenagers and kids using them for appearance are becoming an increased percentage of users. This can be traced to images of large Herculean type men portrayed in all forms of media today. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a prime example sine he has admitted to the use of anabolic steroids. Kids are inspired by him and several other athletes and movie stars who they admire and want to emulate. Getting these anabolics may not be hard as one thinks. Just like any illegal substance, there are ways to obtain steroids for private use. .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 , .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .postImageUrl , .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 , .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:hover , .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:visited , .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:active { border:0!important; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:active , .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69 .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5b49b26d7144ca01b1bad6feeb281e69:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Lord of the Flies Meets Sigmund Freud EssayMany think that there are enough smuggled into the U. CuDi goes further into the first verse by stating that he knows that he is different and that no one understands him, but he is okay with being alone. Life and the people around others ultimately do affect their life, whether they are good or bad company. CuDi has been through bad times with recently dropping from G. O. O. D Music, drug abuse and withdrawal, child custody battles over his daughter, and even betrayal from who he thought were his riends. Those difficult times that made him question his life and pushed him towards loneliness, resulted in CuDi being cold blooded. Through all the hard times, music was an outlet to him. CuDi has changed because of the trials he has faced, and he has lost fans because of this change. If the public sees him a certain way, then that is perfectly fine to him because in the end he is doing well in his career. Fuck em is an expression used to show that the publics comments are disregarded in his mind because it is his life, not theirs. The hook is where KID CuDi is reaching out to those people who think he is and telling them that their opinion does not affect himself as a person. CuDi has always been known for being fascinated with outer space; his references with space symbolize being high, his inner thoughts, the loneliness and darkness that comes along with his life. Tying into the word solar, his life is brighter and more positive. CuDi wants the world to see his Juristic change, though their opinion is not relative, he wants to prove people wrong. The doubts that everyone has thrown at him make CuDi a more diligent artist; saying he is crazy and has changed ultimately fuels his fire to become back superior. Through out the song, CuDi explained what he has been through but people continue to call him crazy though ne is living his lite the way ne wants to. He continues to say that his heart has been swollen, its been healin slow because he is still recovering from a break up with his girlfriend, CuDi does not want to age with out someone being there with him. This also refers to the ongoing custody battles for his daughter; he does not want to alone live at home with out her. Looking back on his life, there were moments that he realized some of who he thought were his friends, Just so happened to be skeptics. CuDi reflects on his life and what goes on through his head, trying to reach eep down and see if he truly knows himself. There were many dishonest people in CuDis life that were never really there for him, but claimed to know him. Years went on, being deceived by backstabbers whom he thought were close to him. Those people made him question who he really is and misjudge his future because they blinded him. He goes to say that there is not any room for people who take space up in his life anymore, if you are not really there for him then do not attempt to make a place in his life.

Prescription Medication abuse increase in the last 10 yrs Research Paper

Prescription Medication abuse increase in the last 10 yrs - Research Paper Example ing all types of strategies to sell their products and they are not bothering about whether the sold medications are used for positive or negative purposes. This paper briefly analyses the prescription medication abuse with the help of all the independent variables mentioned above. â€Å"In the United States, physicians are faced with two opposing dilemmas in the treatment of pain – the potential for drug abuse and diversion, and the possible under treatment of pain. While controlled prescription drugs such as narcotic analgesics, anxiolytics, antidepressants, stimulants, and sedative-hypnotics, play a legitimate role in managing chronic pain and other conditions, the illicit use of prescribed medicines is increasing at epidemic proportions† (Manchikanti, MD, 2006, p.335). Prescription medication abuse is one of the largest segments of drug addiction in United States and it is second only to the marijuana abuse. It is difficult to collect the statistics of prescription medication abuse because of the difficulty in identifying whether the medication is used for curing the diseases or misused for getting some temporary psychological thrill or pleasure. The drug abusers often submit the prescriptions of the doctors to obtain medicines prescribed for some chronic diseases like psychoses. Most of the narcotic medicines are used for changing the moods of the psychologically disordered persons which may have side effects. The drug abusers often give false details to force the doctor to prescribe the narcotic medicines or pain killers which contain potentially harmful ingredients. â€Å"Cocaine (35 percent), marijuana (34%), and methamphetamine (17%) accounted for the substantial majority of Los Angeles-based illicit drug items analyzed and recorded by the National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS) for January–June 2008† (NIDA, 2009, p.49) ‘Misuse of a medicine can be referred as incorrect use of a medication by patients, who may use a drug for a

Honour & Shame Essay Example for Free

Honour Shame Essay One Sunday morning I was driving my children back from their regular soccer game. It was a warm summer day, sun shining ever so brightly, making the uneven town picturesque. As I drove along in my Holden with rigid brown seats and the windscreen wipers that didn’t work, I looked over to my sixteen year old daughter sitting next to menodding and shaking her head rhythmically to, in her words, ‘legendary’ music band One Direction. An image of Asreen flashed through my mind†¦ †¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"Kiran?† the voice on my mobile phone was barely more than a whisper. â€Å"Kiran? Is that you?† .The train ride back home was a typical for Friday eveningIt was very busy Friday evening train ride back from work, â€Å"Are you able to speak up a little?† I asked, raising my own voice overagainst loud chatterschatters from fellow passengers and rattling noise from the train. â€Å"I found your number in Indus Age, My † the line went suddenly went dead. Indus Age is a local monthly newspaper. iIt has largest circulation to Indian and South East Asian community in the country. I was interviewed a week ago concerning about my plight with honour based violence. After two years of lengthy legal proceeding over evidence of injury which included tampered medical records I managed to get a divorce. I was sure that such crimeshonour based violence against women was prevalent and practiced behind closed doors, after my divorce I wanted to assist other women in similar situation and have my phone number published in the newspaper. I thought I lost her but then, few minutes later, she was back. â€Å"Sorry I had to hang up I thought someone was coming. My parents are forcing me to marry a 35 year old man who I don’t even know. I am a prisoner in my own house. I can’t take it any longer. I need help.† She stopped for breath. â€Å"Please help me,† she said in a trembling voice. She sounded frantic; it seemed that she was at the mercy of her family. I didn’t know who I was talking to but I knew I had to help. I spoke quickly, â€Å"Can you get out? There are all sorts of help available if you can get out.† I knew from my own experience that if a girl has made up her mind to run she usually finds a way to do it. This woman could be anywhere in the country but she was desperate and I had to reassure her. â€Å"There is help for you,.† I said. â€Å"There are women refuge houses, people to support. I would support you. You’ll be okay.† â€Å"But how†¦Wait, that’s Dad. He’s coming. I have to go† Her phone went dead. I felt anxiousiety, my pulse shot up as I tried as best I could to get on with my daily household choresroutine and parental responsibilities. Later in thethat evening while I was preparing dinner my phone rang again. I tried hard to understand but couldn’t make out anything except the gasping sound panting. I turned off my range-hood and enquired, â€Å"Hello?† â€Å"It’s me, Asreen,† she spoke, her voice penetrating as if she was right next to me. â€Å"I did it, I ran away† â€Å"Where are you?† â€Å"Redfern.† â€Å"Asreen, you have to call the police. DailDial 000† I had put my phone on speaker as I washed my hands. â€Å"No, I don’t want police. My family will never see me again. My community will disown me,† she said claimed almost hysterical. I could imagine why Asreen didn’t want police to be involved. She was in a state of fear and frustration. Her parents who loved her dearly until very recently changed overnight and now consider family’s honour more important than that of their daughter’s well-being and happiness. â€Å"Meet me at Redfern railway station in 45 minutes,.† I said cleaning up my kitchen. â€Å"Please don’t be late,.† she hung up. I called on my children and explained them that I need to go out on an emergency. I drove as fast as I could past the motorway speeding up to maximum limit. I reached Redfern at 8 p.m. it was crowded, people pushing one another to get ahead in line. Few country trains hurried past while the intercity trains stopped at the platform for passengerss dark and deserted. I walked across the automatic ticket machine to find myself staring at a tall slim woman leaning against the closed door humming what I could understand a very popular song. from Justin Beiber. She looked no more than sixteen dressed in a traditional outfit her head was covered in a veil. I caught her eye and she smiled and then waved at me. â€Å"Kiran,† she said enthusiastically. â€Å"Yes.† I walked closer I could see her eyes swollen lips dried smeared make up over her face. I offered her a bottle of water and walked with her to my car. No one spoke, the two minute walk felt like an eternity. Breaking the silence she spoke softly, â€Å"Thank – thank you Kiran. You saved my life. I read your story and only after I spoke to you I found courage to leave my house.† I didn’t know what to say, I was in a state of shock. I felt rage I could barely focus on my driving I wanted to say something. Asreen continued, â€Å"There were bolts on all doors and someone from the family was always home. I didn’t know how to get out. And if I did, where would I go?† We talked about family, food, school, fashion and many other issues on our way back. We talked as if we were best friends and had known each other for many years. I introduced Asreen to my children Maya and Vicky and offered her rice and lamb curry for dinner. It was close to midnight she looked very tired and fell asleep as soon as she sat on the lounge. I imagined her situation; it was her mother who arranged her marriage. She grew up knowing that one day the subject of her marriage would come up but didn’t expect it when she was sixteen. She was one of the smartest girls in her school; she wanted to become a psychiatrist. One day when her parents woke her up and told her that she was going to get engaged Asreen said bluntly, â€Å"But I don’t want to.† For the next few days I enquired at women’s refuge centre, department of community services, legal aid and other community based organisations. What followed was another court proceeding lasting more than 12 weeks. I became Asreen’s foster parent while she continued her education. Later that year Asreen and I started Honour to help other women from South East Asian family facing honour based violenceI sat next to her contemplating on the events of the day. I wanted to help Asreen and reach out to other women in similar situations confronting criticism and oppression from inside their communities and often close family members for not being obedient to the traditional rules set by men for thousands of years. â€Å"Are you alright?† Asreen said waking up suddenly. I realised that I accidentally dropped my glass on the wooden floor breaking it into pieces. â€Å"Why can’t I live like any other sixteen year old girls? Why can’t I have boy-friends like girls from my school?† she cried while cleaning up broken pieces of glass. It was close to two, I was so exhausted I could barely feel any strength in my legs. I could hear Asreen’s voice slowly fading away. With my eyes closed I tried to seek explanation for such acts against own daughter. The issue of status of women is always in question in a patriarchal society. For thousands of years people from Indian sub-continent had considered daughter a painful burden, a potential source of shame to her father. Family is vital principal group and marriage hallowed as sacred. Women are deprived of their freedom and those who rebel or go against the norms faces threat the people of the community so much so that they are even killed for honour. †¦perhaps this comes out as it makes it like a newspaper article, not a narrative. †¦ As we arrived home I hugged my daughter tightly and said with tears running down my cheeks, â€Å"I love you.† The time frame here doesn;’t work, you’ve already taken the story on years but now go back to the present†¦

Imagery In John Donnes The Bro Essay -- essays research papers

Imagery in “The Broken Heart';   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  John Donnes’ poem “The Broken Heart'; is full of imagery, used to portray his broken heart. Donne uses the imagery so we can get a visual picture of what love means to him. He uses the imagery because it’s necessary to see a picture of the pain he lives with. Donne uses several aspects of imagery, including death to show his grief and Donne also does uses despair to display his pain.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The image of death was used throughout the poem. “…Love so soon decays,'; meaning that love so quickly dies. If you cut a flower and do not put it in water it will quickly wither and die. Another image of death would be the plague. A plague is a widespread disease that causes thousands of people to die. The plague is also synonymous with suffering. Donne writes that he has “had the plague a year,'; by writing this Donne has been deathly ill for what he thinks is a year. Love, to Donne is something that you think about for a long time so, therefore, it seems that you have loved someone for that long but in reality it is only a short period of time. According to Donne, love is very powerful and causes the widespread destruction to thousands.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Donne also uses the image of despair and depression. In the second stanza, he says “Ah, what a trifle is a heart, if once into lo...

Global human power Essay

Most of the victims in the novel were Frankenstein’s family, William, Henry, Justine and Elizabeth. These people all suffered due to the creature’s anger from Frankenstein’s original neglect, which is what begun the hatred in the creature. It is not fair to view the creature as a human, as he was artificially created he has no human morals and has never been taught the difference between right and wrong, in the same sense that a court would never convict a baby. Although the creature did manage to master human language skills, it only pushed him further away from society as it allowed him to express his alien nature. We can see this in the novel when the creature put his hand into a fire, because the colours and heat of the fire attracted him † I thrust my hand into the live embers but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain†. The creature was a victim in the way that he was uneducated of the world before he â€Å"stepped into it†. Elizabeth can easily be portrayed as a hero in the novel as she represented a â€Å"saintly soul† and a â€Å"living spirit of love†. This lets her down however, when she attempts to save Justine in a religiously Christian based way, which was not successful. Although viewed as a hero she doesn’t contain any power over other characters, just a good heart. There is controversy over whether Frankenstein could be viewed as a hero or not, as a cowardly attribute is certainly not a trait of a true hero. When the monster asked him to create a companion for him, he said no as this would enables the creatures to breed and possibly take over global human power. On the other hand he could have spared his family a lot of trouble if he had just created another being who could have possibly shown the love and understanding the creature needed. Frankenstein later realises this when he says â€Å"For the first time, I felt what the duties of a creator towards his creature were, and that I ought to render him happy before I complained of his wickedness†. Elizabeth, Frankenstein’s wife, was also a hero as she managed to bring up everyone’s spirits at sad times, and she continually believed in Justine’s innocence. This particular genre creates a need for both heroes and villains, as it is usually the case of good trying to overpower evil, or vice-versa. To conclude, I believe that there are heroes and villains, as well as victims in this novel. Most of the characters seem to change from villains, heroes and victims throughout the novel, especially the creature and Frankenstein. In my belief the creature was made to be the victim from the opening of the novel as he was neglected, uneducated and ostracised. I believe Frankenstein could have changed everything if he had befriended the creature in the first place. On the other hand Frankenstein was also an isolated individual, although his isolation from society was brought on himself. The novel shows the shallowness of people in society by showing what the monster had to endure because of his appearance, as well as the moral irresponsibility of Frankenstein as a scientist. Frankenstein was always the villain deep down as he attempted to play God, which I don’t think should be attempted by any human being. He was obsessed with the fact that he could create life, but never once to considered if it was the right thing to do. I think Shelley is basing the whole novel on, not what Frankenstein actually did, but what he fails to do.  The way the creature is portrayed in 3rd person narrative allows us to see the creature as a hero, villain and a victim. I believe that the creature viewed Frankenstein as a father figure and was mentally tortured when his own creator neglected him. He had nothing to live for, except revenge.
